Squarespace is a drag and drop visual website builder. Since its launch in 2003, more than 2 million people pay to use Squarespace after the 14-day free trial.

In 2003, Anthony Casalena came up with the idea in his college dorm room at the University of Maryland. He is the current CEO and founder of Squarespace.

Anthony worked on it as the sole developer and owner for four years out of his dorm room while going to school. He initially developed the idea for his personal use, but he shared it with family, friends, and beta testers over time. 

Before hiring people to develop his company further, Anthony had already made a million dollars in annual revenue!

Squarespace Pricing

We gotta be upfront with you… Squarespace pricing is one of the more expensive options compared to other blogging platforms that we’ve come across.

But here’s the truth.

If you can justify the features and functionally that you’ll get with Squarespace, it’s absolutely worth it! Even the lowest plans come with high-quality service!

It’s one of those instances where you pay for what you get.

All yearly Squarespace plans include a free one-year domain, unlimited storage, SSL security, and bandwidth. 

Besides, all plans come with a 14-day free trial where you can get to know the features and determine if it’s the best fit for you. You’re not required to enter any credit card info, so if you’re not satisfied, you aren’t at any loss!

Squarespace offers four primary plans ranging from $12 to $40 per month (billed annually). Those plans are:

• Personal 
• Business 
• Basic Commerce 
• Advance Commerce 

However, we want to point out that Squarespace’s plans tend to focus more on eCommerce, but they still include blogging/website creation for all plans.

Squarespace Plans

Personal Plan

The personal plan costs $12 per month, and it’s designed for (you guessed it) personal websites!   

This plan doesn’t come with all the bells and whistles you would need to start your eCommerce store or any customization features for blogging. However, the plan still offers most of the basic Squarespace features required for a simple but elegant website. (excluding eCommerce)

We recommend the personal plan if you plan on using your website for personal use – not a store. 

So whether it be for simple hobby blogging, a personal profile, or as a starter plan, it all works!

Business Plan

The business plan costs $18 per month and is Squarespace’s most popular plan! For an extra $6 a month, this plan comes with many features you can use to customize your website.

Unlike the personal plan, the business plan allows you to create an eCommerce store, but there is a 3% transaction charge on all sales. However, there is no limit to the number of items you can sell on your website. 

On top of that, you get marketing features, custom CSS for blogging designs, google suite services, and much more! 

We recommend the business plan if you’re a small business wanting to start a blog or website and sell products online.

Basic Commerce Plan

The basic commerce plan is $26 per month and is built for users who primarily want to create a store – not necessarily a website or blog. 

This plan includes all the features from previous plans, but the upgrade’s perks remove all the transaction fees and add extra features, including inventory, label printing, and social media connection. 

It has everything you need to get started on the right foot from the beginning while growing your business.

We recommend going with the basic commerce plan if you plan on focusing on eCommerce and want access to more features.

Advance Commerce Plan

The advance commerce plan is $40 per month (we know, it’s a bit pricey). However, this plan literally has everything you’ll need to grow a successful eCommerce business.

There are advanced features like abandoned shopping carts, gift cards, loyalty programs, and much more that are all designed to power growth in your business.

Basically, if you plan on capitalizing on eCommerce and want the best plan available, then this is the plan for you!

Typically speaking, the features outweigh the cost but we don’t recommend going with the advance commerce plan unless your website is already established and you’re getting enough sales to justify the higher price.

Squarespace Templates

All Squarespace’s themes are classy, sleek, and carry a contemporary look that you won’t find on many other blogging platforms.

Squarespace emphasizes the smaller fine details that most blogging platforms don’t think of, such as designs, fonts, and images. 

However, Squarespace doesn’t have hundreds of templates to choose from like other website builders. In fact, they only have around 100 templates (give or take). 

This may seem like a small number if you compare it to Wix or WordPress that provides hundreds of free templates to use, but Squarespace strives for quality over quantity.

Everything fits in like a puzzle piece, and all you need to do is make it yours. The best part is the templates are all free to preview, edit and use for your site!

Plus, all the templates are mobile-friendly, meaning that your website will automatically adjust any screen, tablet, or phone so it appears correctly.

It makes it more appealing to mobile users while boosting Search Engine Optimization (SEO) without you even knowing! 

Squarespace for Blogging

When it comes to blogging, Squarespace isn’t the most popular option that comes to mind. Actually, the platform for blogging has been known to be rather complicated!

There are tons of features, and a lot of the editing is more manual than a standard drop and drag editor; therefore, the learning curve is higher. 

You must be thinking, why should I use it then?

Trust us… once you get past the high learning curve, it’ll be all worth it! 

Squarespace has apps that allow you to work from your laptop, tablet, or even phone! You can use it to manage, edit and optimize all on the go! 

Keep in mind, Squarespace may have slower website speeds due to the design elements and features. However, optimization can quickly fix these issues!

Squarespace for eCommerce

In our opinion, Squarespace is the best blogging platform for eCommerce. The platform makes it so easy for anyone to edit, upload, manage products and catalogs.

Trust us. We aren’t bluffing. 

Squarespace focuses on eCommerce so much that there are two plans solely dedicated to it. Both plans come with many tools to help a small business owner start out selling or grow further! 

The list of tools and features that you can use is endless with Squarespace; in fact, no other platform out there can beat it. Just some of the best features include: 

• Ability to sell more than physical products 
• Inventory management 
• Point of sale 
• Apple pay integration
• Unlimited number of products 

And the list goes on!

Of course, the features can’t compare to platforms that focus only on eCommerce, such as Shopify, but Squarespace includes multiple functions, making it the best available well-rounded platform. 

Squarespace might just be your go-to choice for your next online storefront!

Squarespace SEO

Every Squarespace website and online store comes with built-in SEO features and guides to help you increase your presence on google.

Unlike other website builders, Squarespace does not try to upsell you with any of those nonsense SEO upgrades or “extra” features to help your website.

Squarespace provides all the main tools and a little more for you to perform well on Google. An essential tool provided is the AMP support feature. It is a feature provided by Google for you to speed up your website speed on mobile platforms. 

This is crucial because about 50% of your traffic comes from mobile, and Squarespace is the only builder that supports AMP pages!

Squarespace Customer Service

Customer service is often a make or break part of any blogging platform. The ability to customize your website exactly to your liking is crucial. 

We get it. 

Thankfully, Squarespace doesn’t disappoint!

Squarespace provides 24/7 email support and live chat support from 4 am to 8 pm Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. 

The best part is that you won’t have to worry about not understanding the agents or waiting too long. Squarespace has all of their customer support workers work out of their New York, Portland, or Dublin headquarters.

Unfortunately, they do not have phone support. Squarespace offers community support forums and an extensive knowledge base for those that like to chat with other users.

Squarespace Pros & Cons

Here’s the thing… Squarespace has many great features, and it is exceptionally well-rounded, but we don’t recommend it for everyone!

It all depends on what your individual needs and website requirements are. Take a look at the Squarespace pros and cons to determine if this blogging platform is for you.

Benefits of Squarespace: 

• Stylish & Responsive Themes: All of Squarespace’s 100 and more themes are sophisticated, simple, and easy to use. Each template is made with perfection, down to the most delicate details. 
• eCommerce: You can sell products and access Squarespace eCommerce through all plans and easily have a blog alongside your store.  
• Mobile Apps: Squarespace offers five different apps. The most useful one is simply called “Squarespace,” which allows you to edit most aspects of your website on the go!
• Customer Service: The live chat features allows you to get help with all your needs instantly. All representatives are friendly and knowledgeable. (Don’t forget the live chat is not 24/7)

Disadvantages of Squarespace: 

• Page Speed: Since Squarespace focuses on website creation’s visual aspects, the page speed is slower than average. It could lead to lower search engine rankings. 
• Editor: It can be a bit tricky to start with initially, and it might take longer to build your website. The editor is a more hands-on manual builder instead of all the extra features others may provide. 
• Navigation: Squarespace is not as suitable for larger websites, especially those that plan to have many categories and menus. 

Do We Recommend Squarespace?

Yes. Absolutely.

In our opinion, Squarespace is the best well-rounded website builder in the market today.

We recommend Squarespace if you’re looking to create a more visual-based blog (photography, food, video) or if you plan on making an online store eventually.

The platform is an excellent option for small businesses looking to use eCommerce. Its interface is clean, detailed, and easy to navigate. 

Always a plus in our book!

Squarespace may be the right fit for many people, but it may not be the best option for you!

We do not recommend Squarespace if: 

• You are on a budget 
• Don’t intend on creating a website with lots of design elements. 
• If you want a fast performing website 

But, ALL of Squarespace’s plans come with a 14-day free trial.
